I have never been much of a baker, but now I am trying my hand at it since I am now a SAHM.  My first Question is if a recipe calls for all purpose flour can I use self rising and leave out the baking soda and salt?  I am tryin to lower our grocery bill and the Hubs loves his snacks and I was goin to try to do homemade instead of store bought and was wanting some tips thanks.  any help would be grateful.

I've been baking for 40 years.  I am well aware that baking powder and baking soda are 2 different things.

I've baked (and catered) for years with both all-purpose and self-rising flour.  And, have had no issues whatsoever in the adjustments I have made between the two.  It's really not as technical and difficult as you make it sound.  It is simply a matter of realizing what you already have in the self-rising and making adjustments accordingly.

Quoting Hanab818:

1 baking powder and baking soda are different and will have different chemical reactions and can not be substituted for one another.
2 you need the correct amount of salt to get the desired reactions with the other ingredients.

If the recipie call for ap and you have is self rising you might not get the desired outcome, because of the added baking powder.

I should of stated that differently and gone more into depth but I had my 2 kids climbing all over me so I just typed a quickly response.

Quoting specialwingz:

Self-rising flour already has the baking powder and salt in it.  Hence the reason it is self-rising.

Now, if the recipe called for self-rising and all she had was all-purpose, then yes, she would need to add the salt, baking powder and baking soda.

But, her situation is the opposite.  In this case, with the self-rising flour, all she would need to add is the baking soda.

Quoting Hanab818:

No. You need the salt and baking soda to have the correct reaction Witt he ingredients. I have a degree in baking and pastry and if you wanna send me the recipie I can maybe give you some subs that will save you money

I'm not sure. I don't think I've ever heard of self rising flour.

Interested in this discussion though...

Thanks so much for all the help guys very interesting replies.  Think I will just stick to what the recipe calls for.  i went and got the AP flour and Baking soda.  my cookies turned out delicious.  now I really want to try some homemade breads.  Do u need a bread maker or bread machine to make them?

Recipe for easy pizza dough would be great.

and please dont laugh I want one for homemade biscuits also.  I have tried these before but they turn  out stiff and hard any help please...

You don't need a bread maker to make bread.  I use a bread maker because it is easier on my wrist.  I made home made bread by hand for years.

personally, I'd use it.  So what if your cookies come out a little fluffier, but I also make an adjustment with the baking powder or soda.

I haven't read all the replies.  go to allrecipe.com, great recipe site.  read the reviews then pick.  Try out 'to die for Blueberry Muffins'  your family will love you.
