Food: buy whole foods, not foods in a box/can/jar. It's healthier and much easier on your recycle bins. We changed our diet 18 months ago to exclude most processed foods, and my DH noticed that we weren't throwing away NEAR as much as we used to. Family of 5, used to throw away 5 or 6 bags of garbage a week, down to 2 a week now.
Cleaning products: Stick with vinegar & baking soda. The vinegar jug can be reused for other things and the baking soda box is practically nothing to throw away. If you make your own laundry soap, there's very little packaging to get rid of.
Reusable shopping bags: good investment, better for the environment, no recycling needed.
Clothing: buy off the hanger or shelf instead of clothes that come in a box.
