25 things to wrap a present with besides wrapping paper

Looking for some creative alternatives to wrapping paper? From sheet music to pages from ruined children's books to silk scarves, here's all sorts of fun (and green!) things to wrap gifts with. Not only are they better for the environment, but most are free too!

  1. Comics
  2. Children's artwork
  3. Silk scarves (find great assortmets at thrift stores like MRCI in Mankato)
  4. Old sheet music
  5. Old maps
  6. Brown paper bags (tie with twine and tuck in a few pine sprigs for a lovely, natural look)
  7. Catalog pages
  8. Old phone book pages (let kids decorate these with stamps or markers)
  9. Old calendar pages
  10. Pages from ruined books (children's book pages can be darling wrapping paper!)
  11. Reused gift bags
  12. Vintage pillow cases (this is good for oversized or oddly shaped gifts -- tie shut with some silk ribbon)
  13. Tea towels
  14. Wallpaper (left over rolls or pages from old sample books)
  15. Pages from children's coloring books and workbooks
  16. Crossword puzzle pages
  17. Newsprint end rolls (most newspapers will give this away free, then you and the kids can decorate it if you like)
  18. Baby blankets
  19. Magazine pages
  20. Newspaper pages (tip, let kids paint it as an art project first)
  21. Old posters
  22. New reusable shopping bags (the recipient can then use the bags for shopping!)
  23. Scrap fabric
  24. Tins with lids
  25. Pages from an old atlas

You can save trims like lengths of ribbon in glass jars for a festive, easy way to store bits of decorations to add something special to your packages. Save bows in one of your holiday gift bags.

All awesome ideas.  I really like using national geographics, I get them from the thrift store for 25 cents each.

I used the sports pages for a  friend's kids sports related gifts. The preteen asked why I had not used fancy wrapping paper, and I told him I'd rather spend the money on his present, he liked the present and the idea after the explanation.

Years ago my father used to wrap oil filters in newspaper and gave us each one, which we knew meant he was tuning up our cars and changing the oil.
