I saw recently that you bought a whole cow. I have checked into that and it does not cost effective for my family.

My question is do you know how much you paid per pound for it after slaughter and processing and all. How much per pound when it was at the point of putting it the freezer? If that's not too nosey. Also was it grain or grass fed?

There is a huge meat sale going on tomorrow and I am curious if its a good deal.

Thanks.

  • 16 sirloin steaks   Avg. 2.25 lb. /pkg =  36 lb.
  • 12 sirloin tip steaks  avg 1.25 lb./pkg  15 lb.
  • 15 round steaks (they are HUGE)  avg 2.75 lb. /pkg =  41.25
  • 17 1/2 pkg. rib eye steaks (2 per pkg) avg 2 lb./pkg =  35 lb.
  • 10 pkg. T-bone steaks (2 per pkg.) avg. 2.5 lb./pkg  =  25 lb
  • 6 pkg Porterhouse steaks (2 per pkg.)  avg 2.25 lb./pkg =  13.5 lb.
  • 25 chuck roasts (3 - 4 lb.)  avg 3.75 lb./pkg =  93.75 lb.
  • 4 rump roasts (3 - 4 lb.)  avg 3.5 lb/pkg =  14 lb.
  • 9 pkg. meaty soup bones  avg 2 lb/pkg = 18 lb.
  • 14 pkg. short ribs  avg. 2 1/2 lb. each = 35 lb.
  • 8 pkgs. beef liver (1 lb. pkg.)  8 lb.
  • beef heart  3.5 lb.
  • 183 lb. ground beef (trimmed so it's lean, 1 lb. pkg.)

So, it's about 521 pounds of meat, about $4.26/lb. for grass fed organic beef.  The cost is still much cheaper than buying it from the store.  (Around here, 80/20 ground beef from grain-fed CAFO beef from unknown sources is $2.99/lb.  Roast is $3.79/lb ON SALE.  I don't even want to know what a steak would cost.)

I did some price comparing for my area and the whole cow prices beat out the meat I saw, unless it was clearance marked and last day to buy. We are going to talk to people and see if we can get in a group to help disperse the cost and meat.

Thank you!!!! It is a variety here for the sale. Roasts, cube steak, sirloin, round steak and ribeyes the average price is 2.99 a pound. Seems good for my area... Again THANK YOU!

Also we prefer grain fed which this is... ;)

I never really paid too much attention to meat prices. I'm going to start trying to go to other grocery stores then compare what it would cost to go to a butcher.

That is a good deal!

For health reasons, we prefer the more flavorful grass-fed organic over CAFO grain fed beef...the grain contains GM soy and corn and who knows what else, and toxins have been found in the meat.  I used to have stomach problems after eating grain-fed beef from a neighbor's farm, but not the grass-fed.  Just our personal preference.

I really want to do this, but we need a freezer first.  Comparing the price to the quality, the prices just can't be beat.  And the grass fed beef is so much healthier.

You can trust michiganmom to get the best deal, hands down!

We don't eat meat at our house....but I recently ate shrimp for the first time in 6 months.  It was delicious but I still liked the steamed broccoli that was on the side better!  LOL
