Learning how to sew.

When I was young my mom and one of my grandmas would sew all the time.  My Grandma made really beautiful clothes.  I would love to make things for my kids too.  Sarah would love little homemade summer dresses.  But I haven't done any sewing in years.  Any advice on where to start?

I'm looking for the same thing. Only, I have NO sewing experience. Neither does my mom so she can't help

I just started in December. For bobbin winding and basics I'd definitely suggest YouTube. Sometimes the machine company has websites to reference also. For project ideas I'd start easy. I made our Christmas stockings and they were a great place to start! From there I've started making bags. Prudentbaby.com is a good place for tutorials. I also Google what I'm looking to make with the words free tutorial, rather than pattern. I've learned if I try to search using the word pattern I end up with a bunch of sites trying to sell me patterns. I've never had luck with a store bought pattern.

Start with something easy and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Sometimes you can even take an old shirt or pillowcase and make a great little dress. And you can find loads of easy cute things to make on pintrest. Here are just a few that I liked.

Ask around.  You'd be surprised who you know who knows how to sew and is willing to help out.  If you really don't know anyone close who can help in person, try "sewing" in YouTube for video help and search sewing tutorials online.  I have seen a ton of easy ideas come up from all sorts of blogs on Pinterest.
