My lovely but not so tech smart hubby opened some weird email on my computer and gave my computer a virus. Its some weird dept of justice thing claiming I have done an illegal activity like child porn (yeah right unless you count birth pics or bath pics on my computer never.posted online as child porn. lol) and my computer is locked until I pay a $300 fine within 72 hrs or I will be arrested.

I seriously can't believe how these kinds of viruses actually work. How dumb do you have to be to believe this. it even says Im being recorded but how? i have no camera on my computer. lol

And the worst thing, my daddy, aka computer tech guy, is out of town for a week. So I have to.wait til.he gets home to use my computer.

Can you restore it in safe mode?

Are you sire hubby don't have a secret stash of child porn? Honestly asking, I know someone who did... And I would have never thought he would.

1 mom liked this

To remove it (I got one of these stupid things from Facebook of all things!) start your computer in safe mode. Restore the computer to pre-email opening. Then, run your anti-virus software. It's phishing software. Here are instructions for removing it http://blog.teesupport.com/department-of-justice-popup-your-computer-has-been-blocked-by-moneypak/ (It's fairly common, unfortunately.)

My DS had that happen last week...it's a virus.  We couldn't even boot in safe mode because the virus popped up before Windows was fully loaded, so we had no keyboard control.  I LUCKILY have another son that works on computers, and he's dealt with this before.   He had to totally wipe the hard drive (we wanted that done anyway) and fix the BIOS.

IF the DOJ were going to catch someone into child porn, they wouldn't threaten to charge them UNLESS they paid $300 and allow them to escape the charges...they're going to go in and surprise the person and not give them ANY warning.

even if he did this wouldn't be how they catch them. And no he doesn't, he rarely uses the computer, he isn't very technology smart, he would have no idea how to hide it from me or my dad which is who maintains my computer. This is a virus.

I always hate when the computer goes down.

Yep.  Recovery disk is the only answer.  Been there, done that.  If one didn't come with your computer, the computer companies only charge $30 for the disk.  It's cheaper than a whole new computer.  And, it works.
