In our household, $500 would be very tight.  We spend $200+ a month in gas alone, around $300 a month for food (and that's without meat costs), and a good $100 more for other household needs including pet food.

Not for us.  I try to only spend $100/week on food, but that never seems to happen, and my husband spends $70/week on gas.  He has a truck and a 30min each way commute.

I think that is too tight, especially w/ gas prices still going up.

You need to try to work backwards. Look at your bank statements and figure out how much you've been spending, and then try to reduce those amounts over time.
I'm pretty sure I could do $500 a month, but it would be TIGHT and I've been doing this for years.

I'm thinking for gas included that would be very tight. Is there a way you can reduce your driving?

Not unless you are BARELY driving and you have no pets and your kids are out of diapers but still pretty young. There are lots of things you can do to save money, food wise.

How often do you have to fill up the cars? it's about $60-70 for a fillup around here, I do it every other week (12-14 days usually) and DH is every week (6-7 days) so that's over $100 per week on gas alone for us.
