My 17 yr old DS bought his first car today: a 1988 Lincoln Town Car!  Has very little rust, one of the windows doesn't open, but it runs great, shifts smoothly, and rides NICE! He's getting 18 mpg (about the same as we get with our newer cars) and insurance is $20 less each month than the lowest of our other cars.

Just goes to show that you CAN find a decent, reliable car for $1000 or less!

I have a 1995 Saturn I bought for $500 3 years ago because we needed a second car but not often enough to justify spending a lot. I drive it to drop off and pick up the kids from school and its been one if the better cars I've owned. Its great on gas and cheap to repair so I can't complain about it too much.

Where I livd ppl try to get an arm & a leg for used cars. I've laughed at ppl on the phone by accident while car hunting.

I tell them I will look under it for rust & they get all upset lol

Good buy for your son & good frugal life lessons!

Surprisingly, it gets about 18 to 20 mpg.

DS is taking care of it/driving it a heck of a lot better than he did my car.  LOL
