Just when you thought it was safe to go into the cellphone store, here, at long last, comes the iPhone 5. Set to be launched September 12, it will be more of the same from Apple
-- a small, slate-style phone with one button and a big, bright screen.
But there are a few things to know when it comes to understanding
whether to pick up the latest glamour phone ... or whether to sit this upgrade out.
Here are a few tips to help you understand the much-awaited Apple toy and what it means for the world of iPhone lovers. Keep in mind that all of this is based on rumor and innuendo, but this launch has been the company's worst-kept secret in years.
It will be launched this week and available a few weeks later (but don't buy it right away). The next Apple event is happening on Wednesday, September 12 at noon Eastern/9 a.m. Pacific. The scuttlebutt is that Tim Cook will announce a brand new iPhone 5 that morning and, if history is our guide, you can expect to see the device ship a few weeks later.
Given the level of fanboyism surrounding the iPhone, you're probably better off waiting until around the holidays to upgrade, unless you want to wait a very very long time for your phone to arrive.
It's not going to be much different from the last iPhone. The new iPhone might be a little bigger than the current model, but there will be very few cosmetic changes. The biggest switch -- from the 3G to the 4 -- was Apple's most drastic to date. This phone should look a lot like an iPhone 4.
It will cost about the same as the current 4S. Apple always releases their new models at approximately the same price as the old models. If you're thinking about upgrading, check with your carrier to see how much (and when) you can upgrade at a reduced price. It rarely makes sense to pay the full amount for a new iPhone unless you're using a model that's a few years old and you want the latest and greatest.
Get ready to sell your current phone. If you're ready to upgrade, get on eBay or Gazelle.com and be prepared to get about 50 to 60 percent of what you paid for your current iPhone. It's a good way to save a little on your endless quest for the newest Apple offering.
It uses a brand new dock connector. Now this is a big bit of news. Remember that long, weird iPod dock connector you're used to? It's going away. As far as we can tell, the new iPhone will have a much smaller port -- 9 pins to be exact -- and it will look very similar to micro USB ports you're familiar with on other devices. Remember that this is all conjecture, but you may need to upgrade your current iPod-compatible devices with what we expect will be a $10 adapter (available, naturally, from Apple).

I'm not planning on getting one. The upgrades are sometimes neat or interesting to see.
I'm not interested. I am beginning to feel like phone technology is leveling out in terms of value for the newest item. I imagine my current smartphone will last a long time as far as it's technology (aside from breaking it and such). I feel the same way about the latest computers. I remember in the mid 90's when every intel upgrade was a big deal (I still remember my college computer - a pentium II 266 with 4GB; the latest and greatest at the time) and now we have such fast computers with so much space that most do not come close to maximizing the usage.
