 very interesting, several years ago I traveled through one of those cities and the pollution was so bad that the air was brown and tasted tangy. yuck

Without even looking I can almost guarantee I live within an hour of 2 or 3.

Hmmm...I'm only close to one actually! I was thinking dirty air not streets. Lol!

 it was pretty bad, it was late April, 85 degrees and we didn't have ac in the van. but we just couldn't open the windows or we could just taste it

It's not at all surprising to me.  It is just an assortment of many of the largest cities in the country.  Large cities have lots of people and the problems that go along with it.  I've lived in several of these cities.  Memphis is the only one that I would not have suspected, at least not compared to the others.
