Ready for “Black Friday?” An OT’s top picks for Christmas gifts for Sensational Kids

by Gwen Wild, OTR/L

It’s time to shop! Make sure your gifts are “sensory smart” by considering the following gift ideas for the sensational kids on your Christmas list.

Less than $20

Food Face Plate – makes eating fun by encouraging kids to play with their food!

Moon Sand - encourages tactile play, fine motor development, and hand strengthening.

Exercise Ball – check the sporting goods aisles of discount stores for the best priced balls. Kids will choose a ball over a couch any day and it’s much better for them!

Between $20 and $50

Bilibo – turtle shell-shaped seat encourages vestibular input and motor planning.

Play Tent – allows imagination to run free while providing a “time-in” for the sensory system.

Lava Lamp or Electric “Aquarium”soothing visual strategies to assist with falling to sleep.

Over $50
Backyard Trampoline – provides intense sensory input that results in “just right” feeling. (Follow safety precautions and use only with adult supervision).

Weighted Blanket – great calming input while relaxing or sleeping. Instructions for how to make your own

In general, the best toys are the ones that can be used in unlimited ways. The toys kids think they want (the ones that are typically heavily advertised) often limit the imagination and leave kids bored within 10 minutes of being opened. Instead, think outside the box to toys that offer opportunities for creativity and will result in years of use instead of merely minutes.
