I just got back from my 8th grader's 504 meeting. He has a couple of amazing teachers who advocated for him so strongly. They knew exactly what he needed and insisted it get put in the 504. They see things in the classroom that I wouldn't have known about to ask for.
One of his teachers told me that another boy in the classroom was complaining about how slow my son is (my son is super smart, but he has a hard time organizing his thoughts and getting info from his brain into words or on paper). The teacher asked the boy if he'd ever considered that there might be a reason that my son is slower than the other kids. The boy stopped and thought about it, then felt so badly for thinking unkind things, that he has now decided to become my son's classroom buddy.
Earlier this year we had problems with kids in one of my son's classrooms complaining about having to work with my son. When we talked about that in the 504 mtg, the social studies teacher said that they have the opposite issue in his class -- they all want to sit with my son because they know he's so smart. The teacher said my son had a big ol' grin on his face when the kids were all clamoring to be his work partner (and no, my son doesn't get suckered into doing their work 'cus that's against the rules, and he follows the rules)!
My son has had so many negative experiences at school, it was so nice to go hear some of the good stuff and to meet a couple of the teachers who have been such positive influences on him.
I did meet one of his idiot teachers, but the other teachers were so positive (and disagreed with the idiot teacher when she said my son couldn't have these accommodations in high school), that the appointment was just fantastic.
We have IEP in two days I so hope I have good things to say like this : )
