Eval Tomorrow- Update

My 5 yr old sons evaluation is tomorrow at 1. Wish us good luck and keep your fingers crossed that he gets a diagnosis that lets him keep all his therapies. I'm a nervous wreck!

Well, after 6 and 1/2 hrs, we got a diagnosis of ASD and ADHD. She said she didn't want to do aspergers because of the changes next year (he'd be moved to just ASD anyway). She also said that she wants him back on speech therapy. He has sensory issues (obviously) and problems with his executive function (he can't think ahead). The good news is that he will continue to get all his therapies and she is making reccommendations for even more.

Reading over all the notes and stuff that they gave us and realized that there is tons to do. I was so worried about getting a dx, kinda thinking it would help everything and now I'm realizing how much there is to get done. We have to call the insurance company, find therapists outside of school that we will be able to somehow afford, find a neuropsychologist (who will probably be even harder to pay for). The evaluators kept telling us how complex he is. Not sure if that's good or bad when trying to get him the help he needs! Just gonna breath now cuz I'm pretty overwhelmed! Thanks for listening and for your support.

Fingers crossed, toes crossed!!! Les hope your child gives them a true picture of himself at the evaluation, and that the person evaluating picks up on it!

There is supposed to be 3 or 4 people "playing" with him so hopefully it'll turn out good! People at work keep telling me that they don't know why I want my son to have autism. I keep trying to explain to them that it's not that I want him to have aspergers or whatever they say he has, it's just that I want him to be able to get the help that he needs.

YES!!! Good Luck! Evaluations always make me so nervous. Thinking of you....

LOL- PUHLEASE- no one WANTS their child to have autism. I got that comment a lot in the beginning. "Do you WANT something to be wrong with your child? Why do you keep pursuing this?" YEAH- that's it- YOU GOT ME! I am making it ALL up to get attention. Good times. Woo Hoo! HA HA.

Lord in Heaven help me with some of these people- my own husband, and my own mother among them.

Anyway, good luck. Doesn't matter what they want to call it- as long as your little guy gets the services he needs to progress.

:-)

We do understand and just to clarify, I didn't mean that if our children have a form of autism it's the worst thing in the world- it just might make some things more difficult for them, that's all. I hope I did not offend anyone with my previous comment. NO mother wants her child to have ANY issue standing in his/her way, but the truth is that we all have some thing that gets in our way. For example, in school, as a girl, I was such a cry baby and the smallest girl in my class all through elementary school. I got teased A LOT for it and my mom worried about my being so sensitive, and I'm NT, so it's not like I didn't have my own issues and I still do- just ask my husband lol. Some things you just have to work harder to overcome than others.

So, GL tomorrow!!!!

Thanks again! I was not offended at all. I knew what you meant. It's the people that think that we want a diagnosis because we want our kids to have a label that annoy me. I don't want him labled, I want him to keep his therapies. He won't keep them past April, when he turns 6, without some sort of diagnosis.

I used to be really shy and basically wanted to blend into the walls! I didn't grow out of that til I was in college and I started to realize that it was okay to let people see who I was and not to worry about what they thought about me. I try to teach my kids (my daughter is NT) the same thing. They are both wonderful kids!

I'm glad you got hte diagnosis you were seeking. Sounds like the hard part is ahead though, getting everything in order and paying for it. Hopefully your insurance will help pay.
