Need tips on discipline without spanking
Please share tips! Please suggest best books!
we use a positive reward system much like a behavioral chart and try to focus on positive behavior. for issues that are more violent we use time outs and take things away for a period of time...good luck! i hope you find something that works as every child is different!
Also, we use time outs and "revoking" of privileges, such as taking away iPad or electronic games for poor or defiant behavior.
These methods seem to work fairly well for us. Our son is awfully strong willed, a predicament with which I am sure many here can relate.
The most difficult challenge for us to be consistent- ALWAYS. That's the hardest part, IMO. We are not natural born disciplinarians.
I got spanked a total of 3 times in my life. It did not hurt, but it was the fear that I had made my dad mad enough to spank me that kept me from repeating bad or annoying behaviors (mostly I was, and still am, a huge whiner lol). That method worked for me as my personality is not as strong as my son's.
Spanking for my son would only give him the message that it's "ok" to hit someone if you are frustrated with something because he doesn't understand the difference like I did.

The 123 Magic Parenting book works pretty well. I woukd check it out from yor local library and decide if you want to buy a copy.

Yep. I have a time out rug too. It actually says "time out" on it and is a circular rug, but any old rug will do lol.
They use the 123 magic method in the public school special needs preschool here (supposedly) lol.
I don't know anyone who doesn't like the book and the discipline method it describes. In general, it seems to be effective for ALL kids, NT, or ASD.
Our DP recently suggested the book when I asked about discipline and I pulled it out of my handbag and said, "Already got it!" LOL.
