New here! would love your input!
I would love to hear your opinions , totally new to all of this - Im sure you get a lot of new people asking the same things over and over so thank you for taking your time and I truly do appreciate any input.
My son who will 4 next month is on the waiting list at Kennedy-Krieger for evaluation, both behavioural and ASD. The issue is some family members are against it and dont feel its necessary . Im at a loss with him and Ill try to keep it short but you guys are on the front lines of this epidemic and if there was anyone to ask if he sounds like he might be on the spectrum I thought it would be you.
Basically he has had issues from the moment he was born here is the run down-
-Refused to bf as a newborn.
-Feeding problems , resisted the bottle, was diagnosed with severe reflux and at one point he was hospitalized and on an ng tube.
-At one point around 4-5 months was choking on feed, had to be thickened.
-Speech delay , didnt start speaking until about 2 1/2 . He was in speech therapy and was discharged at 3 , now they think he needs it again because he is very hard to understand.
-Has strongly resisted sleep since he was an infant. Screams and screams for hours many nights. Giving Melatonin on doctors suggestion, helping a *little* I think. He is literally ALWAYS tired because he wont go to sleep till late, doesnt sleep in and will absolutely not take a nap in the day.
-Sensory disorder- he was evaluated and didnt qualify for services although they did confirm it.
-low muscle tone in his mouth
-Wont potty train. Its been almost 2 years now we have been PT and he still wets his pants at least 3-6 times a day
-Hyperactive, its like he is running on a motor that doesnt stop. Pretty sure he's got some ADHD going on. Hes also very destructive, he has torn down/apart pretty much everything on the walls/in of his room, broken the window and his dresser.
-VERY easily frustrated, often throws things ,outbursts and horrible tantrums , that havent gotten better and he is almost 4.
-He was kicked out of the first pre school we sent him to for biting. I learned later though that it wasnt a very good preschool and he hasnt had a problem biting since then , we returned him to his home daycare.
So I know that many of these things point to ASD , BUT this is the thing, he is very affectionate to me , and he seems to enjoy being around people but he gets very overstimulated in large groups and needs consistent breaks . Birthday parties are a nightmare, he loves them but just doesnt handle it very well. He wants to make friends with other kids but can be a little socially akward. He can read my emotions he knows when Im sad and will come up and hug me and tell me its ok, so he feels empathy for sure. And thats were I get mixed up because I thought that was the one defining feature of ASD- the inability to read emotions .
So I dont know what to think , thank you for reading this far! Does he sounds like he *could* be on the spectrum? I just dont know what to think anymore, he is such a difficult child I feel like something must be going on...but maybe he is just different and thats who he is? His ped suggested the evaluation because of all these issues and the fact that he doesnt look her in the eye when she speaks to him at visits. He is very shy and generally does look people in the eye when he is speaking to them .
