I meant to post about this a couple months ago. Mind you, this is not a debate about which one is better.

Does it really matter what kind of therapy our kids (and other loved ones) get as long as it helps them? We have 3 agencies (that I'm aware of) that do OT and one (again, that I'm aware of) that does ABA. There is like this rivalry between them (don't know if that's the norm with all OT/ABA agencies or just these).

We had our autism walk back in April. The agency that does ABA was originally involved, but they pulled out at the last minute and were going to have their own walk in June (I don't know if that ever happened).

Do you really have to be so petty that you pull out of something that is supposed to benefit these families?

I don't know. but, they are still a business, despite being therapy meant for autistic kids.

What does that have to do with participating in a walk for autism?

meaning, they are ran by people. people don't always make wise choices, and it's a business, if they are incompetition with other clinics for the same business.... that logically, may interfere with doing things they *should* do ethically/morally, simply because of business and immaturity by the people who run their business.

They may have been told not to do something for business reasons... businesses are complicated.

Yes we deal with this locally where my son goes to school.  His school was branched out to accommodate other locations and opened in our area about 5 yrs ago.  Since opening another "ABA therapy" school has opened.  I toured both schools but was put off by the fact one of the schools will not tolerate aggressive behavior and the children can be expelled with forfeiture of tuition.  Anyways, lol  this other school will not join in on any of the county autism fundraisers or activities.  They fund-raise for their school only and from what I've seen are only in it for the money.  A friend of mine actually pulled her son out of their school and enrolled him in my sons school and was actually harassed by the director of that school.  I think there are some great schools out there for our kids but there are some very bad ones too :(

Oh I see what you mean, sorry you had me confused at first. :)

But no, in this case, it's definitely over the rivalry (and I know the rivalry exists because they told me). Not that you're wrong though.

That stinks. I've actually heard they do the same at this place that does the ABA therapy. His coach that he had for soccer told me that she was in it when she was younger (I think she said she was bi-polar) and they kicked her out. Told me I should not put him in it. I mainly took him there to be tested.

I have noticed many OTs tend to be VERY against ABA! WTH? What happened to- what is in the best interest of the child???? Ugh!

I agree, though I've never heard the OTs talk out against the ABAs. Not saying they've never done it, just they've been tactful enough not to.

I will say though that the main lady that heads up the ABA therapy and the lady that heads up one of the OT places are actually friends with each other. It just because an issue with each other when they discuss "business."

Where I live I dont see that with the clinics---but do see it with the competing support groups!  Seriously, it's pathetic.  There are 3 autism support groups and they are always doing stuff like what you describe and worse.
