I also try using encouraging words with my kids. For example, I will tell my kids how I really enjoy their artwork or inventions. Then I backup my words and get the supplies they need so they can continue to create.
I know my folks love me but all I got were the words when I was little. Later in life my mom confessed, she and my dad never believed very much in 'hobbies' and that they would just be a waste of time and energy. I strongly disagree. Having a hobby is a healthy thing even if it doesn't make you rich with money.
