Hi, my name is Amy. I am a proud mother of two beautiful children. My daughter is 27 months old. My son, the star of this particular show, is 8 1/2 and just diagnosed with PDD-NOS in the last few months. I am finding I may run into some red tape because my son is older and just diagnosed. The local Autism Society in our area doesn't provide services to older children. Hmph!

I think the severity of his "symptoms" may help us along the way. The test used in his Psych Eval showed that he overqualified in the Autistic Behavior category. :) Plus, he also has a Moderate Intellectual Disability.
He's had Special Needs from day one and has been getting SSI for as long as I can remember. He also has an IEP going back to Preschool. So it's not like I am new to this. :)
But as much as I know alot about Autism, I don't know anything about being an advocate & NEED him to get any and all services that are available. Right now, my main focus being on a state Waiver & Respite Care.

Any of you ladies able to give me some insight, advice, suggestions on how to go about this? We live in Wisconsin. :-)

Thank you for the info! I was living in Madison up to about a year ago. Now we are about 45 min away in Wisc Dells. But I still go to Madison for alot of medical appts, etc. I am finding more and more services available, but always open to more information. As of right now, my 1 hold up is the WEAP in Madison only takes kids before their 8th birthday. My son is 8 1/2. Other than that, we'll see what's out there. :-)

I am currently in the process of getting on the Waiver that will get us some respite. It looks as though it will work out. But right now we are just filling out paperwork, and there is a waitlist, so that doesn't necessarily mean instant gratification. :-) My son was born premature, and was showing early signs of Developmental Delay when he was an infant, so he has been on SSI most of his life, thank goodness.

Thanks for the welcome! I already have a feeling I am going to enjoy this group.
