Finally after 2.5+ years of testing and trips we have a diagnosis! Starting DS on meds soon and therapy every other week! So happy for answers! I make peanuts at work and ex is 5k+ behind in support...does anyone receive SSI for their child? The half a tank of gas for therapy appts is absolutely draining my bank account! I thought it might help defer costs

I know you can write off your gas for therapy appts. on your taxes, keep all your receipts!

my sone who was recently dx acouple months ago has started therapy but she comes to our house or the school and also they made us apply for loop hole state medical assistance its for people who are over income but has a child with a disability

SSI depends on the level of disability AND income. Your son will be more likely to be approved if he has an IEP and needs help with his daily loving skulls. If he is "mild" and functions pretty well he probably won't be approved. It goes faster if you have documentation of his struggles through the years. The SSA will want the names of every doctor and clinic he has been to. It was a 10 month process for us but that was 15 years ago. It seems to be easier now. I know kids who seem much higher functioning than my son who get SSI. Apply and hope for the best.

DS had an IEP before diagnosis ...I think our pediatrician has to sign off maybe?

Who dx'ed. him. People seem to get approved faster if a a specialist did the DX rather than a pediatrician. Also what tests has he had? It all will be reviewed.

Welcome to the group! You can learn more about SSI at http://www.ssa.gov/. You need to keep a log of how many miles you use driving him to appointments and your insurance deductibles because it is a tax write off once you reach 7.5% of your income. You need to update the school about his new diagnoses in writing and request in writing an evaluation for Special Education services such as therapy and educational services (http://www.wrightslaw.com/). You can learn more about Asperger Syndrome at http://www.aspergersyndrome.org/. I also recommend checking out http://www.chadd.org/. You can find local support groups through Autism Society (http://www.autism-society.org/) and Easter Seals (http://www.easterseals.org/). I recommend for recreation to check out Special Olympics (http://www.specialolympics.org/), TheARC (http://www.thearc.org/), and Variety Club (http://www.usvariety.org/).

The ADOS test is the only one I can remember the name of...we started going to childrens and continue going there to the DDBP department every 6 months but go to Child Focus Inc for the bimonthly appts and they are the ones who diagnosed and the tax write off thing is great since im trying to get my home based body wrap business off the ground so I already have other write offs but I need help with the short term...
