IEP meeting

UGH..... Just got the letter in the mail about my son's IEP meeting. The people that they have attending are people who have little to no contact with him throughout the day . The one general education teacher who is attending is my least favorite out of all of his teachers, and generally just seems disinterested in my son all together. Kinda pissed. He does a class called social skills CID every day, where they work on social skills and I assumed that teacher would be attending. I also assumed that the teacher who has him for three periods out of the day would be there because she sees him the most. He does a social skills group once a week with the school social worker and she's not even going to be there. Is that legal? Technically I think she's part of the team.

The IEP meeting HAS to have the general Ed and special Ed teacher at the yearly review. There SHOULD be a paper for you to agree to come and there should be a place where you can request for one of them to be there! If not, call and tell them why you feel it's important for the social worker to be there!

There's one general ed teacher attending. His speech language pathologist is attending, but she really only spends minimal time with him, The aide who helps him occasionally with his writing skills is attending, but again, she doesn't spend much time with him. They are having an autism specialist come( who has never met him) and the assistant principal, who says hi to him in passing . I want to request additional people , but I already had to reschedule because they told me about the meeting a day in advance. I don't want to have to reschedule again if they aren't available. SOOOOO frustrated.

If social skills are your sons bigger challenges I would be persistent about the social skills teacher and social worker being there. Maybe they could submit some sort of written assessment of how your son is doing and where he still needs help (If they cannot attend). It really doesn't make any sort of sense to have people at the meeting who are not in contact with your son vs, people who know him. Tell who ever is in charge the people who you believe should be present ,if they do not show up and your not happy with the outcome of the IEP meeting, do not sign anything and request that the IEP team regroups when the important players can attend.

If the people you want to attend are not listed, request their presence, You can do that.

But yea what they are doing is legal, but you can ask that others who have more information about his case be present. Just do it in writing
