Hi to the group, I have 3 dc and my youngest is 6yrs old and in the process of being screened, so far just the specialist from school. I am hopefully meeting her this afternoon to discuss refering him to his GP.I'm glad I found this group as so many mothers just seem to think so negatively about a child who shows signs of being autistic.

Edit: Well I didn't get to the specialist from school as she had double booked me and someone else. So tomorrow 8:30am I've rearranged for. I hope it's the right diagnosis this time as he's getting more upset at school. He finds it difficult to put word's onto paper and so he tries to draw explanations. He LOVES drawing and is extremely good. But his teacher said he has to obviously write the sentences as you can't draw everything. He used to love writting but lately is finding it extremely difficult. He has also gone quite a few steps backwards in his reading. I don't know what to do for the best.

Hi, thank you for the kind welcome. You must have a very busy homelife. Thank you. I took ds to see our old GP just over a year ago and he just looked at him and said "all kids are like that at that age" hhhmmm. I have since moved towns and so my ds is at his new school so fingers crossed.

Hi there, I live in the uk and practitioners (or the one's I've met) over here seem to think the child should be of school age before diagnosis. So you found out very early on. Thanks for the welcome :)

where I was living when he was 2 they had an early intervention program. I hope once you get the test results they can point you in the right directions for help/programs. If not there are many websites available that explain things you can do with your child at home to help :)

I know how that is. I went through 4 pediatricians before I found one that took my concerns seriously. They all said my son was "lazy" or "spoiled".

I am low income and dont have the funds for alot of therapies/programs that are out there. When I didn't have a computer/internet access I went to the public library and got tons of books on autism and ways to help my son cope (behavioral modification, social cues, sensory play ideas, speech therapy ideas etc...). Now that I have a computer/internet access I find tons of ideas, projects, etc online. I pulled my 14yr old out of public school March 20 and I am now homeschooling him. All of the materials we use are free via internet/library. There are many resources, it just takes some time shifting through all the information :)

Hi there and welcome. I have four kiddos, the youngest (9) is my ASD, the other three are just teens with attitudes.
When we lived in Europe, I noticed the doctors and therapists found it odd that my son was dx'ed before 1st grade (he was dx'ed in preschool). But Americans try to get kids dx'ed early to get early interventions. The American specialists found starting therapies early in life help, unless you deal with military doctors (like me), then they kinda just find excuses for the behavior.
But at the same time, I loved working with the Germans, they didn't push medication (like the American doctors) for my son's sever hyper, they used focus tools and caffeine. Worked a lot better on my son and he made progress. Came back to the states and the schools refused to allow him coffee during the day so had to find other avenues to help him focus since I don't want to do medication. (Shh, I still give him coffee before I send him to school, the school just hasn't caught on that he focuses better in the am due to his coffee and not so focused in the afternoon since the coffee wore off lol)
