Autism - Support Across the Spectrum Autism - Support Across the Spectrum

Mobile Photo

Hello, my name is Celeste and I have a 3 year old daughter named Jaelynn. She is being evaluated for autism. She was seen by a psychologist and diagnosed with a speech problem but on his report it says she has low autism but it's not severe enough to get the diagnosis. This upsets me because I just want my daughter to get all the help she can get! Lim going to court to appeal the psychologists diagnosis. I'm very nervous.

$1500

Quoting JaelynnsMommy94: What was the price? If you don't mind me asking?

Quoting princess_1983:

We paid out of pocket to get my son tested.

If she really has only slight symptoms of autism and her main problem is a language disorder, then she will get appropriate help.   If you think she is more disabled by autism than they do, you can discuss it with them and explain why you disagree, and you can have her go to another specialist.

But if she truly has as her main problem, language, she will be getting help for that.

Thanks for the reply. Quite a journey.

No.

The first dr we went to was a child psychiatrist. I wasn't going to him looking for an autism label but it was in the back of my mind. He just Dx him with ADHD. We really liked this guy and continued to see him for years as he was the one who managed my son's meds. When the school wanted to put my child under an autism label for his IEP, I told the school I wanted to ask his doctor about it. I told the doctor that the school was giving me the choice to put him under either autism or other health imparment. The doctor said put autism.

That led me to really start looking for an autism label. So I took him to an autism clinic. It took us months to get an appointment and the appointment lasted all day. A "team" of professionals looked at my son and asked me questions and at the end of the day they just said: NO. That left me shocked and irritated. I told them - he has this sign and that sign. And they said it wasn't enough to be considered autisim.

I later wondered why they didn't say PDD-NOS becuase that is basically the same thing as many signs but not enough. And I wondered if maybe they were only going to Dx classic autsim or nothing?? I have no clue.

Several months later, they called me back. How were we? Did the clinic help? Were we happy? And I told them no, we were not happy and no they did not help. I told them, I still had issues with my son and they left me more confused and that the appoinment was pointless and worthless. To just tell me NO and send me on my way? So whoever was on the phone, referred me to a neuropsychologist.

We went to see this guy and after TWO days of testing, this doctor gave my son a Dx of aspergers and adhd. He said my son was so severely adhd that when they do a test to measure his attention, my son could not even pay attention long enough to finish the test! That still makes me laugh.

Quoting Simran81:

Just curious, were the 3 doctors developmental pediatricians?

Quoting mypbandj: Welcome! It took me 3 doctors to get a Dx. Try to see a developmental pediatrician or a neuropsychologist.

I paid out of pocket too for a developmental pediatrician. He is the bomb. I think it all ran about $1000. $600 for reading all previous documentation, evaluating ... tbc
