I knit but don't crochet, so can't help you there. But have you tried looking on Ravelry to see if you can find the hat or something similar?

I agree. It's some sort of cluster separated by chain space(s). I would say it almost looks like a V stitch with the ch1 eliminated from the middle and replaced with another whole stitch.
I did a cluster stitch, ch 2, skip 1 stitch. Its not like the one in the pic, BUT its working up pretty nice! I'll add a pic once im finished. My fingers are killing me since im working with.double strands and im not used to that. Lol

It looks like a v stitch to me. That's my favorite stitch. It's so pretty.
