Ideas for something for a newbie to sew?

I am dying to sew something...but I'm so new at it. I am supposed to visit with my aunt so she can help me learn to pin and cut a pattern but she lives far and we are both busy...so in the mean time I need something simple but rewarding to try.

So far I have made 3 fleece blankets (all I did was sew straight lines and that didn't even come out perfectly) and a taggy blankie, and then some little handwarmers...so basically I've seen a bunch of rectangles lol.

Any ideas? Tips?

Lol at your straight lines. I was going to say pillow cases and throw pillows.

Pillow case dress if you know any little girls. You don't need a pattern and there are millions of tutorials online for it.

the first time I sewed (back in 9th grade) I had to sew a pillow it was heart shaped.

Try an apron.  Plenty of tutes on line.

You could try a rag quilt ... they are very forgiving.

I'd stick with basics for now.

There are a few free patterns on fabric.com that you could try out.  I've made a few things from there.
