I have had brothers, singer, and now a Huskervana Viking and Brothers have been my favorite by far. Even over this viking.

I learned on a vintage zig zag and it's still my favorite to use today. Because it doesn't have any computerized aspects, it's very easy to control and maintain. The only downside, is that due to re metal components, it's very heavy so portability is pretty much unheard of.
You can find old machines on yard sale sites for super cheap. People list them all the time. I bought my first one with its desk for $20 and all it was missing was the bobbin case and manual. Most manuals are available to download on the Internet.
Good luck!
