Football pre season?

hey mommas. Ds will be playing football this year for the second year. He will be nine next month. In our area, they start in third and fourth grade, so he started as soon as he was eligible. So obviously he knows what he's getting into! Lol. Our practice starts at the beginning of August. We want to get a preseason work out schedule started for him to work on in June and July. Most of June will still be taken up with baseball, but all of July he can focus on football conditioning. Does anyone have any good websites or resources for that age group?

Since it is his second year, he should know stretches and drills to use to get in shape. This is one of the reasons I don't just drop off my kids and run. I sit and watch warmups, make note of the stretches and drills. In down time, when I hear, "I'm bored." I offer to workout with them...it helps them and me to stay in shape.

Oh, he does. And I did stay, through every single practice and game. ask me about the huge hail storm. Lol. I was just hoping to find a weekly plan for running, strength training etc that would be appropriate for his age to help him build up before the practices start to make his first couple of weeks a bit easier- if that's ever possible, haha. He's already in great shape from baseball, but I'm sure you know- baseball ain't football! ;)

My 10 y/o son plays football too. This will be his second year of tackle ball and he played one year of flag football (it was the first year the league started flag).

Our head coach does a core and speed program open to all athletes on Wed evenings through the summer. First year we will be going. It doesn't start until June so I'm not sure what they do but will share when we start.

In the mean time I would have him work on the basic drills they do to warm up and sprints.

Thanks for the suggestions. Our league isn't allowed to have any coach led stuff until the actual start of practice, without he exception of "camps." I dunno. I'm always kind of amazed at how SERIOUS football is! Lol. After our first few practices, I turned to dh and said, "well, it ain't baseball....." yikes!

Sprints, Push-ups, and sit ups are all you should be worried about.  Until they get to a middle school program they should be content with that.  Make it challenging, time the sprints, up the # of sit ups and push ups, etc.  The harder they push themselves, the better off they'll be.

I have coached lacrosse for a few years now and the big thing is stretching. The kids have no idea how to do it. I highly recommend they learn yoga for kids. It helps them relax and learn to stretch the right way. Any kids yoga video wouldbe good. Along with running, bike riding and swimming over the summer. I don't know if you live near a beach but open ocean swimming is so good. My kids swim everyday. By the time they hit the pool in the winter they are 2times faster than the year before. No currents to swim against. He is so young I would make it as fun as possible.

He's such a driven kid. I came into the living room yesterday and heard some weird breathing. I thought maybe my oldest was having problems with his asthma. I looked past the couch and there was ds on the floor- with his stop watch timing himself doing planks. We are starting a chart for him so we can track it and keep it challenging/fun and he can see how much progress he's making. He just wants to make a good impression the first couple of weeks of practice. And this is ALL him. Dh and i encourage him and support him, but this is his goal and plan. We just help him implement it.

He does love it. :) he's actually better at baseball and I keep trying to get him to focus on that, but nope. Lol. The boy wants his football.
