We actually put ours up in the basement.  We entertain a lot during the holidays, and we always entertain in the basement.  It's finished, of course, and we designed it with entertaining in mind.  I love that the majority of the holiday "mess" is downstairs, but ready and waiting when I want to enjoy it.

Neither, its going in the middle of the wall just inside our door, best place to put it.  Now our last house it was in front of the window
