What's your favorite field-trip with your kids? How do you go about preparing? Do you plan you're lesson's leading up to the event around it, or are you more spontaneous? How do you go about finding places to take your troop?

Where we live there is history piled on top of history so everytime we head to the city it's a mini field trip and there are so many things to do we never get tired of going there.

Plus we can turn nearly anything into a field trip, even heading to the grocery store.  One day we were out and we walk all over the place and we were coming home and got to this stretch in the road and we kept seeing little things jump around, got closer and they were tiny little toads.  Hundreds of them!  Turns out we even got them in our yard, which is a sort of DUH since we live right next to a lake and we got a bunch of wildlife in and around our yard at any given time.

My fav field trip was our most recent.

2 field trips in one day!

Next month we are going to Farm day (locally-700 farms in my county!)

And I'm hoping to be able to afford to go to http://garenfest.com this year but not sure about that as it's a 2 hour drive-with gas prices like they are-that may break the budget for that field trip sad

We haven't been doing many field trips this year withthe gas prices as they are and my Toyota that gets the good gas mileage is getting old and giving me issues.  :( I have to drive "The Beast" aka the F350 SuperDuty (11 MPG) so going an hour away minimum for most field trips gets expensive.

Our best one this year was a comboe field trip and Girl scout/ Boy scout outing. We went down to the harbor and took a 3 hour whale watching trip, came back in and went to a marine aquarium.  It was a lot of fun. I tied it in to the SCience and water Journey we are doing with DD and the boys have done water way too many times to count so everyone enjoyed it.

One trip I enjoy, (I don't think the kids are that into it - LOL), is put on by the Forest Lawn Cemetaries - they have actors that portray Michaelangelo and Leonardo De Vinci. They speak and dress in period and tell about "their" lives. It's quite interesting. Then we tour the cemetary grounds and they have hundreds of famous pieces of artwork and sculptures. Odd place for a field trip but I enjoy it. My Grandma is burried there so we usually take a picnic lunch and "have lunch with Grandma" LOL T

hey also have a MAGNIFICENT showing of The Crucifiction - it's immense The Crucifixion is the largest framed mounted to canvas painting in the world, standing 195' long by 45' high.It is set to music and they darken the auditorium and highlight parts of hte painting as they tell the story. It is SO mocing. I try to go every year.

Not a Christian but I would love to see that.  I have seen some stories, some good, some OK, some not so good depicting the Crucifixion.  I'd really like to see one that incorporates so much into it, bet it makes an amazing experience.

Gas prices are killing us too, if we can't get there by foot or bus right now it isn't happening.

Anyone who lives in the same aera could form a small group and take a field trips together so the gas price is not so bad on the pocket.

We are planning a field trip to the Science Center-Sci-Port in Shreveport, Louisiana. We went to the website for information.  http://sciport.org  Yes, we're super excited about going and I'm sure this will be our favorite field trip this year. :D Here's a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8qu6Q0Uwjk

Last year we went on a trip to our state museum, pet store, and to the lake.

Sometimes we plan ahead. Not always. When we were studying about our state we just up and went to the state museum, I didn't know their hours but it worked out great.

When we were studying about animal life and habitats- the life cycle, vertebrates and non vertebrates  we went to the pet store and to the lake.  I could consider our trip to our pond during class time as a mini-field trip I guess. We were learning about the food chain at that time.

This summer we hope to spend some time at a couple of parks with a petting zoo,  and maybe riding lessons-horses. We want to go to the fire station for a fire safety class, the grocery store for math class, and hopefully execute our plan for community service...bake cookies and drop them off at the nursing home, police station, or NICU emergency waiting area in the hospital.

Pretty simple stuff but my kids are young, 10 and under.

Thankfully, there is a HS mom in our city who organizes field trips. For a small annual fee we can receive lists and sign up for the trips. She can get group rates and hire entertainers for groups that way. Sometimes I will do some teaching ahead of time before we go to certain things.
