Emancipation Day

Yes, I'm aware that the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in January, 1863 (the 1st, I think?), but word didn't arrive in my town, Paducah, Kentucky, until the 8th of August that year.  So, we have the 8th of August Celebration happening no (and for the last few days).  Anyone else have interesting local events celebrating this (or other elements of historical significance)?  Once the kids are old enough to understand even a fraction of what's going on, I see an awesome unit study opportunity!

Do you (and your homeschoolers) know when word reached your local big town?

Hope I got some gears rolling!

wow, never really thought about that.  Very intereting.  I had to look it up.  Our city (In CA)  was not founded until after the Emancipation Proclamation, but there is still a great lesson there.
