Ask the Expert: Which Curriculum Is Right for You?

Posted by   + Show Post

Do you use a specific curriculum when you homeschool? How do you know which curriculum to choose? Do you need some guidance finding the best curriculum fit for your family?

CafeMom is excited to welcome Cathy Duffy to the group to answer YOUR curriculum questions. She is a curriculum specialist and author of "Top 100 Picks for Homeschooling Curriculum."

Cathy recommends that you start any curriculum search journey by checking out both HomeEdExpert.com (a free curriculum recommendations service) and CathyDuffyReviews.com (Cathy's homeschool reviews site).

Cathy will be in the group from August 22 to August 26. You can ask your questions now, as replies to this post. Cathy will post her replies here as well.

Welcome, and thank you for joining us, Cathy Duffy!

I was looking a little more at ABC Jesus Love Me, and their fourth year curriculum is really a kindergarten level program. You will still have to get some recommended books and resources to do their program as is true with the other sites. But ABC JLM looks like another good option for K.

ABC Jesus Love Me looks like it's preschool, but Letter of the Week looks like a decent K program, even though parts are not yet complete. It has a structure for teaching letters and sounds but it uses lots of real books and activities. Ambleside Online offers another option for a Charlotte Mason approach. These don't teach your child online. I don't know of any online program that actually does the teaching for free.

Do you have a recomendation for free online curriculum for kindergarten?  I have been looking and so far I have seen ABC Jesus Loves Me and Letter of the Week.  Do you know of any other good curriculum sites?

I am glad to hear it wasn't something more serious.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I am pretty much just looking for a guideline to follow with fun ideas so that I don't have to do a lot of hunting through individual resources.  However, I am thrilled to do the actual teaching myself.  I will check out Ambelside....I have never heard of that one.  I apreciate your input.  Thank You.
