Hello, my name is Jess. I am the PROUD mother of a 4 year old girl and a 1 year old girl. I am determined to home-school both girls, but I am totally lost in a sea of ads for on-line schooling. How does one choose what will work for their family? I live in Michigan and will be researching the academic standards for our state, but then what? I would like to talk to any moms willing to help a fellow homeschooling mom get started. I would also like to say how thankful I am for cafemom and this group! Let the learning begin! :)

 welcome jess,

first of all look up your state law here in a lot of the states you dont have to offically start schooling till 6 or7.

you dont have to use those online schools!

right now your girls are young so all you need to do is just play with them, find or make some learning games that are fun, do some art work, read a lot to them, dance, have them memorize verses or poems or sayings, (most kids are like spunges at this age!)

sites for first timers  http://eho.org/beginning/default.asp

what i did with mine was i made large numbers , abcs  and color, shapes, and put the on the walls so they could see them,  we counted objects (for a bit of math) online you can find 'file folder' games that are very easy to make with a manila folder. fun also! kids love em.  heres a few in here http://filefolderfun.com/SearchKindergarten.html

My name is Brandy. I am a Christian wife and sahm. My daughter Ayla just recently turned two years old. I love to read, listen to music and spend time with my family. I also manage two blogs that are still trying to gain a little more footing. :)

For kindergarten just get a phonics program going. Some early math skills. After that the horizon is wide open. Don't worry to much about what they 'should' know. They have books called What Your Kindergarter Should Know and that could give you a jumping off point but a lot of subjects we think of as important like science and history aren't going to be touched in a long time. You'll do much better with her at home, she'll learn far and away what she 'should' know. So just have fun! What kind of things does she like?

It's good to see a new post of this :)

I'm Nikki and I live in SW Ohio. My oldest is 6.5 and is in first grade. Middle is 2.5 and is learning through play. Youngest is due in June 2012 ;) three girls!

This is our first official year, and it's funny how much things changed from just a few months ago! We are eclectic homeschoolers, gravitating toward Charlotte mason and classical.

Hello everyone! My name is Crystal. This is our 5th year to homeschool. I have a 14 yo son who is in 9th grade, and an 11yo son who is in 6th. Both of them started in public school. Since the story of our homeschool journey is pretty long and complicated I will not go into it. But, I will say that I am sooooo PROUD to be homeschooling my guys and will be doing it 'til the end.

We are a mixture of Ecclectic, Classical and Charlotte Mason.

Hi my name is Cathy and I am from Rutherfordton NC. I have 2 children that I am now officially homeschooling.  My son is 7 and my daughter is 5.  We are currently using AOP lifepac and have liked it.  I plan to use the SOS next year with my son.  I think he might have a mild form of aspergers and would love to talk to more moms with the same situation.  I am looking for play groups in my area.  Thanks, Cathy.

oh and I coupon and would love to do some swapping.
