My oldest will be 1st grade next year. I was wondering when did you start using actual text books to tech from? Kindergarten has been really easy and cheap not really needing any kind of books. Will I ned to get books starting in 1st or can I wait until 3rd grade?

Thank you

We start using textbooks immediately.

Our almost 3 year old will be starting a formal kindergarten program next year, using textbooks and worktexts (probably through Seton).

Of course our 10 year old does as well :)

I prefer to use a textbook only as a resource guide more or less.  Workbooks/textbooks for math.

Writing is a lot more fun if it's letters to pen pals, or a family newspaper, geneology, poems, and such.

I agree with the Charlotte Mason/ Living Book method on this.  You may look up either one on the net.  A child can learn a lot more from a single book then from 2 textbooks, with a lot less boring and a lot more information.

ex.  In learning about History one single book on Elizabeth I will actually cover of coarse Henry the VIII and his 6 wives, the Renaissance, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Humphrey Gilbert, Privateering, Pirates, Spanish Armada, Ships, Merchants, Peasants, Scotland and the Highlanders, Bloody Mary, the Lost Colony . . .  You see my point. :)  And what's more educational in Science then experiments!  I use a 4 yr cycle of History Time lines as my main pivot point.  Studying anything going on around the world at one given time.  In order to make it easier.

Libraries have lots of choices and they can always borrow from other libraries for you.

A child is born to learn and lead.  You just have to let them.  Then you'll see who they were meant to be.

I think it's prudent to mention that Living Books (as a method) doesn't work for every child. Not all children have the innate ability to gain cohesion from living books; they need the structure of text books.

OP - you will spend the first several years learning what works best for your child. Lol. It takes time!

We still don't use them. My oldest is in 6/7th grade? Mine are visual/audio learners, so using textbooks would be akin to torture for them.

We are first grade, and use a math text. (saxon and life of Fred)
We also use a few programs like all about spelling, handwriting without tears, etc. Over this past year (it's our first year homeschooling) I have learnt a lot about what we need and what we don't. Next year we will do science and history on our own I think. I haven't decided if we will use handwriting without tears again. I might go ahead since baby will be 2 months when spew start back and it's something simple Julia could do while I need to do other things.
