'Speak Up' Bullying Documentary Is a Must-See for Parents & Kids (VIDEO)

Posted by Jacqueline Burt

bully docBetween the school shootings and the suicides, the so-called "bullying epidemic" seems scarier than ever -- at least to parents like me. So I was pleasantly surprised when I heard what Stuart Snyder, president and chief operating officer for Cartoon Network had to say on the subject (the network will premiere Speak Up, its first original documentary about bullying, this Sunday, March 18 at 5:30 p.m.).

“Our ongoing research and direct conversations with kids told us plainly that bullying was a major issue most kids believed they could do something about it if given the right tools for dealing with it," said Snyder.

Whoa! That's pretty good news ... kids believe they can do something about bullying.

I always assumed kids felt helpless about bullying ... too afraid of the consequences to "speak up," as it were. But according to this new documentary, it's not that kids don't want to do anything, they just don't know what to do.

That's where we come in.

Speak Up is meant to be watched by parents and kids together, which makes sense, and that's definitely how I plan on watching -- with my kids.

Hopefully my kids -- and yours -- will get the message. I'm hopeful, because as the makers of the documentary point out:

"It is one thing to be told by parents, teachers or other adults that 'bullying is bad.' It is much more powerful to learn this lesson from the heartfelt and emotional stories of other kids."

Will you watch Speak Up with your kids?
