'Pregnant With 9 Babies' Lie Is Final Straw in Our National Big Family Obsession

What is it about multiple babies that makes a person want to lie? Yesterday reports were swirling that Karla Vanessa Perez, who claimed she had fertility treatments, was expecting nonuplets on May 20

It would have been super cool (right?) except that it was a complete and total fabrication, according to MSNBC. Liar, liar pants on fire, get thee to a medical facility as soon as possible. Isn't that how the old nursery rhyme went?

Because this is insane. But the fact that the story went as viral as it did says an awful lot about our culture right now. And the picture it paints is not a pretty one.

We are consumed by tales of multiple births. Kate Gosselin, the Duggar family and Octomom consume the tabloids and our TV screens with their extraordinary and chaotic families. We love to hate them and dig into their lives and see what makes them tick.

Some we dismiss as crazy -- Octomom, of course. Some we say are cruel and harpy-like -- Kate Gosselin, natch. And then there are the Duggars who many herald as the ultimate family who built themselves a debt-free life and a giant house all while raising 19+ children.

What is clear is this message: Have a bunch of babies and become instantly famous. Who wouldn't want to cash in on that?

The deception was discovered when El Diario de Coahuila, the local newspaper in the town were the woman lives, went to investigate. Not only was she not pregnant at all, she already has three children who are 15, 12 and 4 and after the last was born, she had an operation to prevent her from getting pregnant again.

So why would she lie? Isn't it obvious?

She wanted attention. And, as promised, we gave it to her. Her "pregnancy" was reported in every news outlet and shouted out from every mountain top.

We were duped. Maybe we can learn something from this hoax. Maybe our obsession with big families is WEIRD. Maybe we need to take it down a notch and recognize that larger families are neither glamorous nor ideal given the limited resources we all have both personally and on a global level.

Sure, nine babies is excellent tabloid fodder and it sells plenty of papers. But our obsession with "freak" births makes us look like a bunch of gawking gossip hounds with no lives. We can do better.

Why do you think this woman would have lied?

It was stated in the article--she wanted the attention, for however long it lasted.

People do odd things that just do not make sense to the rest of us all.the.time.

Yeah, because no one will ever find out you aren't actually pregnant or anything...
