Although our oldest son went to "regular" school for the last two years of high school, so it wasn't an issue for us, I've been through the college admission process. Sixth is probably too young, unless they are taking Algebra or something more advanced. However, so that you know what you need to do when the time comes, I'd suggest that you take a look at the admissions sites for the colleges you think that your children might be interested in -- or just take a look at a good sample of colleges -- and see what they require for home schooled students. Different schools sometimes have slightly different requirements, but from what I could see, most would accept (and in fact asked for) detailed descriptions of what the child did in some kind of portfolio form. But I'm basing this on California state schools (University of California -- and there were some differences even between the various campuses -- and State Universities). You probably aren't going to be able to produce something that will work for every school, but you can make sure that you have the appropriate information at the right level of detail for those schools that you think might be appropriate. Good luck!
It depends on where they are going. Most of my friends who home school have their kids go to the local JC starting around 16 years old for one or two classes at a time. By the time they are done with "high school" they can go to the JC full time, they already have their foot in the door so they are in and the college doesn't look at grades. Then when they are ready for the next level of college, they apply for a transfer, so the college they are going to doesn't need a high school diploma or high school grades because they have their JC grades.
