my sons are currently attending public school (fifth and ninth grade)...iam pretty involved and buy a lot of practice /extra work books that we do additionally to schoolwork at home so iam considering homeschooling as an option...my concerns are the fact that i am german and went to school there where obviously the curriculum was completly different but the basics are the same...my kids are in gifted class and on high honor roll...i would definetly need a state approved programm...another concern is social interaction...i heard that some home schooling moms do fieldtrips together with others..not sure whether that is their iniative or a programm...how are moms with older kids doing ``it``?what is your schedule?is there a timeline or can you go through material at your own pace?do you just have to do tests in a certain time frame and a certain amount per grade or are there actually testing dates?this is all new to me so any comment is appreciated p.s. we are in savannah/ga

Hi! Welcome to the group.

There are plenty of high level homeschool curriculum out there to choose from. Also, they don't need to be state approved at all. Many of them are going to be equal to, or surpass, what your kids are learning now. I will check your state laws to see how often you have to test. Each state is a little different.

Many homeschoolers get together, even into high school, and go places, have classes, do dances. Check yahoo!groups in your area for homeschoolers or even just Google them. It's amazing what will come up. Let me look at your laws real quick.

And here is a link to a well defined list of Georgia's law. It looks to be a fairly easy state to homeschool in.

Your questions about timeline, materials/pace, tests, etc can be answered by going to your local school district's website.  The local school board is where you're going to have to register to homeschool and they'll tell you where you can get your kids tested, what the requirements are on you, etc.  I'm not in GA, but as far as I know, you can do most of the cirriculum at home and then have them tested (standardized testing) by a cerified person or at a school so that the school board knows that they're actually recieving an education.

all the best to you.

 Hi mollysmom.  Welcome.  : )

First things first, check out your states homeschooling laws. http://www.hslda.org/

You can also buy a boxed type curriculu or buy it in single subjects. You can also make your own curricululm.  Don't worry about socialization. Your kids will be better socialized by being at home with family and neighbors. You children get socialization from going to Sunday church, the grocery store, playing outside, learning strnger danger signs.  All these things help your children to behave properly and know what to do in a public setting far more than being in a public school school building.   As for testing dates, that depends on what your states homeschool laws are.  Even at that, there shouldn't be too many, maybe a couple.  Scheduling is as you make it to be. When do you want to get up and start and when do you want to finish?  We start around 10 and finish around 3 to 5 depending on what the day produces.

You can do this.  :)

What about an online charter school? Some are free, and may be a good transition since your children are used to public school. Try searching for k12 or connections academy. It is still yechnically public school provided curriculum, done at home.
We tried it a few yrs ago, only lasted 3 mo. We have always homeschooled, though.
