Hi everyone, I am in search of info on how to get started homeschooling it's something I have to start ASAP since my sd has been expelled and can no longer attend public schools which is a long story as to why. I have searched online and found several programs all of which I cannot afford. I have found some used programs or curriculum out there that I might can afford. I'm needing help for an 8th grade student. Does it matter which state, kinds of curriculum other than core subjects? Are there special guidelines I must follow? I have just learned of all of this in the last week, any help would be very appreciated...thanks in advance jen

What state do you live in?  You will need to read up on your state homeschool laws.  =)

You might look into your state's K12 program (if they have one). It's a free online e-school.  http://www.k12.com/enroll-or-buy/find-a-school-and-enroll

Jen, welcome! I am sorry for your situation and for the panic you must feel.

HSLDA is where I got all of my info when I pulled my kids out of public school. There are other sites, but HSLDA is easy to navigate and has many links for curricullum, local groups, help with highschool, and specific laws for all states.

Once you know the laws of your state, then figure what style of homeschooling would work best for her and would  best accomplish those goals.

Homeschooling is different for every single family and every single student. My suggestion for now would be to take a trip to the library or download some ebooks, whichever works best for you, and just let her read for the next few weeks while you figure all this out. Take some field trips with her, talk about the books she is reading, cook with her, and maybe throw some cool Netflix history videos in there. That is PLENTY for the next few wekks while you wrap your head around all this.

I was told if your child has been expelled they can't take them because it is a state funded public school.

Oh and those are the only two local ones in our area the schools here suggested them. Does anyone know about purchasing a curriculum and flying solo?

When we homeschooled in WV we were able to use the public school books and workbooks for free. Maybe check into that.

Timberdoodle.com has complete boxes of curricullum by grade level you can purchase.

If price is a huge factor, you can use your library, currclick.com and get some workbooks from SAMS or Walmart.

If price plays a smaller role, check out Oak Meadow, Queens, ACE, Rod n Staff or Notgrass.

If price is a pretty small factor, look into Sonlight, Abeka or Winter's Promise.

this is what a lot of us do jen, we fly solo!!

you need to find the curr that you want, buy it and start your son schooling, but first find out your states homeschool law!  http://www.homeschoollegaladvantage.com/resources/homeschool-laws-by-state

how does your son feel about doing school at home? hes old enough to be responsibe and do the work without you bugging him?!

you probably want secular books?  can you get the books through your school?

heres a list of some curr and schools online you can check out

http://www.oakmeadow.com/

https://www.mheonline.com/

the best place to get curr is christian liberty acad, but its christian but they use the best of all the curr and you can either go through their school or buy the books separate

Depending on your State, it might be wise to spend a month deschooling if you can. You can google that term.

Does she like workbooks? Reading? Is she is artistic? Any disabilities? Do you want Christian or secular?

Hi I do time4learning as a core curriculum. It has all the state requirements for $20 per month. It even has a forum to talk to other parents in your state. You can even try the demos on the website.
