How do you Organize?

Do you have a whole room set aside for school? Do you use the dining room table? How are your school supplies organized? Do you have a file system, if so how does it work? Is everything color-coded? Is there a system, or is a as we go type of style?

I'm looking forward to homeschooling my DD, and I would like to know what you have found that works best for your family.

Pictures welcome.

I cant post my pics because im mobile, but you can see our school room last year if you go to www.journeythroughlove.blogspot.com
i was so happy, proud and organized in that room.
Well, I got pregnant and had to give it uo for the baby. So this year most everything is in the livingroom/dining area. I am currently in the process of organizing. And trying to make it similar to what we had in that room.

I use those colored 3 drawer things that you can get in different colors. I have a few crates that things hang from file folders. I also have 4 long wire shelves that all my supplies sit on. They have clear, plastic shoe boxes sitting on them to hold everything.

I will post pics in a bit. We have a small den that I turned into the office/school room.

DS2 and DD have desks in there where they can workor they can curl up on the couch or floor. DS2 has ADD so I do still need to keep him on track a lot, though it has gotten better with age/maturity. DS1 worked mostly at his desk in his room last year but he tried slacking so he will work at the table this year, until he can show me he is being responsible again.

Each child can keep books in their desk or color coded crate. We go to my parent's house often so they just grab a crate n go. In their crate they have a binder for finished work. Its divided by subject so I can grade it easily. After it is graded it goes into the back of the folder.

The charter school requires 1 work sample per subject per month. After I pull their samples, I pull all the prior month's work and but it in a 4 drawer cabinet. By law, I don't have to keep it, but I do. Once the cabinet is full, I will throw away the oldest year.

Ah yes, I was just gonna post something about this! We started out in the dining room but now that we've moved and have an extra room, which also serves as the computer room/office/sewing room/library, we have a dedicated school room space!  How we do homeschool is on the blog at http://www.thistlerosestudio.com/p/home-school.html  Pics here:

School desk corner with the supply boxes. We used to use Sue Patrick's workbox system, but found it too much for Ash.  So we use the boxes now for supplies, art kits, etc.  Ash's desk now has her dedicated computer (we use Switched on Schoolhouse curriculum, computer based from Alpha Omega)

This bookshelf holds all Ash's school books, extra workbooks, reference material, woodworking tools and sewing machine. The binders on the top shelf hold significant work done by Ash in each subject, and we keep it throughout her school years for reference.

This is an old vanity Ash had that is now used for an art and reading desk.  This bookshelf is on the other side of Ash's reference library bookshelf and holds all her reading books.

And here are the supply boxes so you can see what we have here. The mini boxes have scissors, pencils, color pencils, erasers, math beads, markers, flash cards, wood burner, etc. The library box holds books from the public library, which we go to weekly.

We just completed our school room. It has made it much easier to contain everything. I group books in book case by subject. Science has two shelves, I've divided World History and US History, they each get their own shelf. Math and Language Arts each get their own, etc. I can at least find what book I'm looking for a little faster now-LOL. I've been building a home library so it was getting really crazy.  I label everything on outside of totes so I can see it instantly. I'm not done (totally) yet. I'm sure it will always be a work in progress.LOL

We have a small space in the back of our livingroom that is used for classroom space. There is not much space so I have to keep our supplies to a minimum and keep them out of sight since it tends to look cluttered if I have ton of bins out in plain sight.

I'm mobile at the moment so I can't post pics.

We use the couch for reading and kitchen island for writing. We have a us and world map on the wall, we need to put our calendar on the wall and we have a bookcase full of school and fun books. All of that is in the living room. For my stuff, I have a huge binder full of the lesson plans and schedule for each day.

OK - we havent changed it musch from last year..... Here is the south wall. The only addition is a days of the week strip ($3.50  ar Walmart) at the bottom of the white board where I can write in the day's "out of house" activities. We were having issues with transitions and them remembering what we do each day so when we do opening time in the morning, they can look at it and know the game plan for the day. (Sorry it's blurry- I can't find the "real" camera and my phone one stinks) We also replaced the old hand me down keyboard that broke with a nice new one so DD can start lessons again.

Then we the north wall. It has DD's desk (next to her desk are about 8 science in a nutshell boxes) and the couch they work on and a tall bookcase for storage.

The tall bookcase has 2 shelves behind doors at teh bootm that are all my hardback books. The lower open shelf is scout stuff. DD's girl scout books on the left and drawer bins for important paperwork one for Cubs Scouts, one for Boy Scouts, another for Girl scouts. The middle open shelf is school supplies- everything in marked pencil boxes and our All About Spelling books.  The top shelf is more of my books.  Yes...I'm an addict!

The South wall has my desk and computer and DS2's desk . h smalwit storage cabinet is stacked with more science in a nutshell boxes, extra binders, curriculum catalogues and our recorders. (I really NEED to have DD learn it!) We just keep avoiding them and I know she would love it.

Note: that corner is ALL cleaned and straightened up now...hehe...This pic was taken on adare."what does you space look like RIGHT NOW!" lol

The east wall has only our DVD rack and is open into the living room.

Here is a shot that shows the layout of the whole room. Oh, each of the storage bins (to he left of the white board where the globe is perched) is for different activities. One is Cub Scout stuff (I need to pass this on to someone as I no longer do cubs) another is Girl Scout stuff, another is Boy Scout stuff, and the last is karate stuff. Our old belts and broken boards and tournament info.

I've seen a lot on this. I am probably going to give it a try when we start. I love the concept. How do you plan the boxes?
