Welcome to the group

Quoting DyslexiaParent:

HI ALL, I've been homeschooling for a decade+.  My guys started out in public school, but had learning disability issues.. dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD (CAPITAL "H"), executive function issues, speech-language difficulty, etc.   When we pulled our guys from public school, we started homeschooling with the intent of teaching them to read (which our school said was not going to happen) and were going to put them back in school for high school.  Well, by time we got to high school, NOBODY thought going back to public school was a good idea!  SO, we forged ahead.  I'm still homeschooling my youngest, but my oldest is about to be a senior in college, doing fabulously, and the homeschooling journey has been better than we ever dreamed!!  I even wrote a book about overcoming the fear of homeschooling to help other parents understand how homeschooling can be quite different than you imagine it will be.  I was terrified before we started, but if I knew then what I know now.. We would have started a LOT SOONER!!  ANYway, I hope our journey is an encouragement to others who have children with learning difficulties and consider homeschooling.  I truly believe homeschooling is just about the best educational option!!  :-D

Quoting shyanntech:

Hi im Shyann.. i have been thinking of homeschooling my son. for many many problems that has happen in school now. there is a case of depression for him to. my son is going to be 10 in June going into 4th grade. last year when i found out what happen i try ed to home school him. it was a fast jump and wanted him out of school fast. but the supervisor on the school board would let me do it.. then not even 2 mos after school started my son was slammed into the glass doors 2 times. then he was choked by a kid not once but 2 times.. all the school did was take away recess for the child that chocked him. Since they have hippa laws i cant get the last name of the kid. to report it to the PD. my son will not give out the last name on top of it. so i think its just not a good place for him. i know i could move but we dont have the money saved up to move yet. but that will be the summer of 2014 we will be moving. but until then my son needs out of there..that is my story please let me know what can i do??

Well I am newish to this site. I was a member in 2009 but I forgot how to access it so i never got on anymore, but now after 2 kids and one more on the way I find this site is a great resource for me.  My husband and I feel homeschooling is our only option when it comes to educating our kids. Partially because of the schools in our area but more so because we have changed our diet to only ALL NATURAL foods and now after 2 years of this if the kids or I get ANY unnatural "food" it makes us violently ill. For me I get dehydrated and have had to go to the hospital from it and when it comes to the kids they get violent and mean and they are just not my kids.  Its horrible to watch them go through it and its completly preventable so I figure if they go to school they will get the bad "foods" not meaning to just being a kid and then it will cause them to become little monsters.  I constantly get crap from people in our community because of this but if I can make my childs life better this way why not.

Welcome! I'm Shannon and I've been hsing my boys since my eldest - who is also ASD/PDD/SPD - since he was a toddler. I look to how comfortable he is in his learning environment, and the fact that he's 100% confident - because he is never ridiculed. He's going to be 12 this year. This past semester he did a monalogue in a theater class! I was so proud. Let me know if I can ever help in any way!

Hi I'm Kristin.  I am not homeschooling yet, but plan to do full or partial for middle school.  My son has ASD/PDD-NOS (autism spretrum disorder/pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified).  He has been in public school since age 3 and is now 11.  His reading comprehension is very low despite his ability to decode very well, so that is going to be our focus starting this summer.

I joined this board last week, and already have been very encouraged by reading the posts!  Thanks!

Welcome to the group! my eldest is going to be 12 and he is also on the spectrum. I'm so thankful for HS!

Quoting NeneMama:

Hi everyone! I am the 2nd mom to 6 children. I live with my sister and brother-in-law and have been helping them raise the children for over 10 years. My BIL was military and spent many years overseas, so I was the other parent.

We homeschool the children, ages 5 to 17, and have been doing it for 8 years. Two of the children have autism, which is a big challenge.

My name is Veronica.  I am a married mother of two children.  Starting in September, we will be homeschooling our DD11.  She will be an incoming 7th grader.  The school we are going through has classes 2 days per week at their facility.  Being that I am a homeschooling noob, please feel free to pass along any advice or tips, as they will all be welcome.  :)
