1931 – The United States adopts The Star-Spangled Banner as its national anthem. (I knew this one!)

1991 – An amateur video captures the beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers. (I remember watching this on the news and thinking that this is the world my child was going to grow up in. I was 8 months pregnant with my oldest child then)
