First off what state are you in? That will help us know what kind of laws you have to fallow. Do you know your children's learning styles? This to will help in picking a homeschooling style & curriculum or making your own curriculum.

Have you read the laws? It looks like you have homeschool states options.

Hi Kim,  there are lots of choices, and it depends on Tennessee State Laws, and your child's learning style as to what direction you need to take.

How To Home School goes over many of the methods available to you as a home educator.

My sister is a homeschool mom in Tennessee.  Here is some websites you might want to check out.

http://tnhomeed.com/

There are also two conventions coming up in May that would give you access to all sorts of curricullum options.

I went to a convention when I started homeschooling and was a bit overwhelmed with the resources.

I moved away from a boxed curriculum for next year and this site was my savior while looking at options! OP, this site is a great place to start!

Every one I know says that about K12.  We also did K12 our first year but as an independent option (no time limit.)  Not sure which subjects he has to test in due to age but let me tell you this... At the begining of the year dd tested into 3rd grade LA we did 2nd grade LA because the writing was too much for her and 1/2 way through the curriculum(thats all we did that year) she tested into 4th grade and tested in the 97th percentile on the standardized test.  I know its hard to say its no big deal and have them believe you but try to ensure him that its no big deal.  Can I tell you most kids in PS test in the 50% and the requirement in most states is 28% to move on to the next grade! Shocking right.

There is a ton of curriculum out there.  It depends on what you are willing to spend and learning/ teaching styles what will be the best fit.  What are you looking/ hoping for?  How old is ds?
