Hurricane Unit????

I just saw a post and it reminded me that hurricane season is almost here.  Then that got me to thinking about maybe doing a unit over the summer (trying to make it fun, yet educational).  Does anyone have anything like this?  I will go do my searching (I am a search addict and admit it).  If I find something I will post it too.

Perhaps you could talk about how hurricanes form, how they are named in alphabetical order, when they are most likely to occur, the difference between hurricanes and tornadoes, the categories of hurricanes, maybe try to go to a weather station to talk to a meterologist (field trip + science).  Try looking up educational Youtube videos about hurricanes and also Amazon has good children books on hurriances.  See if you can find anything in the ancient past about hurriances-like myths and things like that.

You can also take this time to perhaps talk about devestating hurriances that you remember (such as Hurricane Katrina) and FEMA and what FEMA does.

If you don't find a suitable packaged unit, try contacting your local weather station, and search through local universities. The people at the FSU program were really nice years ago when I worked with them. Try here:

A hurricane unit is a fantastic idea! Please share what you find.
