DD and I just attended our first SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) meeting and had so much fun!
When we got there, a group of teenage boys were wearing bits of armor, bashing and whacking away at each other with sticks. But after we watched for a moment, we realized there was some skill and technique involved in the bashing. Cool.
Then we went to meet the rest of the group, learned how to draw and paint illuminated scrolls that they use for awards, listened to some singing, learned two dances (ok, DD didn't dance, but she may in the future), and had a really good time.
She wants to go back! Not only that, but she thinks it will be cool to develop a character. To do that, she needs to do a lot of research on different cultures and different periods of the Middle Ages. I asked if she wanted to me to help her find resources and she said that she wanted to do the research herself.
Woohoo!! Self-directed learning, y'all!
