Hi... We're heading into year 4. I will have two 8th graders and a 5th grader. We use a public charter school so they attend on campus classes once a week for geometry and math. They also take occasional enrichment classes. We are responsible for meeting with an Ed coordinator 6 times a year and turning in multiple learning samples. I do an extensive language arts/history program so there is a lot of writing and everyone prefers typing over handwriting. We've never used a typing program but I think it be a good idea....maybe something they could do a few minutes a day online over the summer? Low cost is key.

This one looks interesting.  It has a typing course and then games and stuff to practice the skills.  It is free as well.

Learn2Type

Another one, same kind of deal but looks more school like and less games.

Have you used either of these?

Not yet, they are two I am looking at using with my son who is 7.  Watching him try to type stuff on the computer is painful.  :)

I used Mavis Beacon in highschool and bought it to work with my girls who are 6 and 7 and to get my typing speed up.

TypingWeb.com is free. That's what we use.
