Considering Home Schooling - anyone in the High Desert of CA?

Hi I am Jacque and as I posted elsewhere - I had never considered homeschooling...

For 10 years I was a public school teacher and then an adjunct professor.  My mother is a retired Kindergarten teacher and for the past 3 years she and I had been working with my now 5 year old with her Pre K materials....I suppose we never really thought about what might happen if she ends up moving beyond K 1 and 1st grade materials - and yet not even be old enough to start K 1.

And now here we are....starting kindergarten in a school ranked 1 of 10, which means 9 other schools did better.  Having been a teacher I have a pretty good idea what can happen to an advanced kid with a lot of energy, if not nurtured correctly. And I am terrified her passion for learning will be smashed before she has developed the maturity work around this obstacle.

And yet - I am worried about her getting the socialization and making the friends she needs for age appropriate development.  Which brings me to my final point - if there are home schoolers in the High Desert / Hesperia area please let me know.

I'm not in that area and my kids have graduated anyway. I will say there are a million ways to socialize other than going to school. Reigniting a love of learning once it's been stamped out is so much more difficult.

I'm from Victorville but live in OR now. You will find many many ways to socialize your little one. Don't let that be the only thing holding you back.

I am not from there but my youngest son was born in Palm Springs. We used to live in Rancho Cucomunga.

I am! Well, specifically Fort Irwin. So unfortunately, while we are in the high desert we are still far away from any other town.

I was also afraid of the social aspect but have found that our local home school group does a lot together. We do field trips, park days, chess club and PE. They do birthday parties once a month and other fun things. My kids also do track, baseball, paintball, swimming and my daughter does girl scouts and ballet. So, they have lots of social activity.

Have you looked into your local home school group or co op?

Home educators have a network that is nothing less than amazing.  One of the things they provide are co-ops to help children develop the ability to get along with others of all age groups.

Socialization:  Homeschoolers Are In The Real World   (Support Groups In Arizona)

The first place to start is with Arizona laws concerning home educators.

I just hope it helps. I know it can be scary going it on your own. Hopefully it will help make homeschooling easier.
