7 Worst Messes My Kids Have Made

by Kristen Chase

7 worst messes my kids ever madeIf you've got kids, then you know how messy they are. Even the neat ones.

Wait, are there actually neat kids?

After comparing my kids' messes with a friend of mine, I thought it might be fun to rank order them all.

Now I have four kids under the age of nine, so I'm pretty sure you can imagine how messy my house can get. So without further ado, here are the 7 worst messes my kids have made. Can you relate?

7. The Lego Closet

We use a Swoop Bag for our LEGOs which is a brilliant organizational gadget, except when your kids decide to dump every single tiny LEGO out in their closet. On the bright side, they're contained in a closet, but on the down side, you've got 4517201 LEGOs in your closet.

6. Paper Towel Party

I'm not quite sure exactly what I was doing at the time, but my two middle children decided to unroll about three paper towel rolls and shred them all over my kitchen (see above) I swear I was finding paper towels in all sorts of weird places in my kitchen for days after. And yes, it's worst than LEGOs because you've got piles of paper towels completely USELESS. Argh!

5. It's Raining Styrofoam Peanuts!

I'd love to personally strangle whoever invented styrofoam peanuts, because I cannot tell you how many times I've had to clean them up off my floor. The winner was when I had an entire near television size box of peanuts in my foyer that the kids had to decided to tear apart and toss in the air like rain.

4. Toilet water puddles

Just a few days ago, my little girls decided to go to the potty together (one on the big toilet, one on the baby potty) and then when they clogged the toilet, they decided to plunge it themselves. And then jump in the water. Gross.

3. Maple syrup spill

I'm not quite sure how my son managed to drop the entire container of maple syrup, but he did, and it broke, thus covering my kitchen floor in a large puddle of maple syrup. I have never cleaned up something so sticky in my life. In fact, I think the spot is still sticky.

2. Inky Naptime

Many years ago when my now 9-year old was just two, we lived with my in-laws and instead of napping, she decided to play with a broken ink pen in her room. I walked in to discover the white carpet, the walls, and her hands and face covered in ink. Hooray for Stainmaster carpets. And paint.

1. Powdery Web

By far, the worst mess was when my two middle children (are you sensing a theme here) got a hold of a container of GoldBond powder and completely covered my entire living room with it. The whole room was WHITE. To make matters worse, they took about four balls of yarn and wrapped them around the furniture, creating a powdery, yarn spiderweb.

Tell me about the worst mess your kids ever made!

Sheesh. Lol! My daughter wrote all over herself with a crayola marker once, and unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper during one of her hour long poop-a-thons. No she doesn't poop the whole time, but she insists on sitting there reading, playing with a toy, etc. I let her because its the only "alone" time she gets in this tiny house. I'd do it too if I could. Lol

The worst mess my children ever made was right after DS was born about 9 years ago. My older 2 were 5 and almost 7.

I had brought a box of baby powder which had about 4 or 6 big bottles of baby powder in it. I was sleeping and they woke up and had a feild day with it. You couldn't even breath that's how much powder was in the house. It was everywhere. On top of ceiling fans, in the dishes, carpet was white, anything that was in the living room or kitchen was covered. You couldn't sit on the couch for like a month without it sending baby powder in the air, no matter how many times I vacuumed it.
They were white from head to tow. I couldn't even bring the baby out of my bedroom all day. It took massive amounts of cleaning and having fans blowing out the window to get it all done.

On the plus side my house smelled baby powder fresh for over a month. LOL.

My kids are angels compared to these stories, lol. They leave their stuff all around the house and I am forever stepping on the Lego they didn't see when picking up, their rooms are always a mess no matter how much I help them organize them.

A funny story, but not too messy...my dd once tried to plant popcorn in my room, while they were watching a movie I went to the bathroom, came back in to a little pile of wet popcorn kernels on the carpet. I guess dd thought if she put the "seeds" on the ground and watered them, they would grow into popcorn? She was about 3, I was annoyed, but impressed she knew to water seeds lol.

Overall though, my kids haven't really gotten into things they shouldn't, and now they are 10 and 11 so I think we managed to skip that stage.

One day I walked in to my girl playing with poop. What a mess. My son doesn't make messes. Just like his Dad.

I can't think of anything worse then what an old friend of mines children did! Her 2 kids opened a  gallon of purple paint & got it all over themselves & everything in their bedroom. We are talking mattresses, floors, walls & they looked like purple smurfs.

We had a baby powder episode once too...forget if it was DS1 or 2. Kid woke up before I did and spread the whole new container around the living room.

The worse mess ever was when I had my oldest three and was pregnant with my fourth child. Hubby and I were downstairs watching tv and then decided to go upstairs and check on the kids. Well, it was a good thing that we did. My 2 boys had taken about 6 to 10 bottles of shampoo and conditioner and drained then on their mirrored closet doors that they also had taken down off the tracking. It was all over both doors and all over the carpeting and in their beds and all inside their closet. Plus, it was all over the bathroom as well. Took me weeks to get it all out of the carpeting and to get the 2 mirrored closet doors back in good condition again. Consequently, it has never happened again. That was about 12 /13 years ago. Nothing has been that bad since. Close but not quite. Lol

A couple of years ago one of my kids (not sure which one) decided to get up in the middle of the night and empty 2 full bottles of Hershey chocolate syrup all over the living room. Literally they stood in the middle of the living room and spun around like a helicopter and squeezed the bottles.

This made me smile.  I walked in on my youngest dunking a toy in the toilet and then putting it in his mouth.  Repeatedly.  :(

There's so much mess/disaster in my house, it's so very hard to quantify.  But I think the one that made my head hurt the most was the permanent marker (note to self:  moving markers should get put away when not in immediate contact with an adult hand) all over the carpet, the couch, and the glider.  I still have that glider, and it still makes my head hurt.  I did track the pencil marks all down the hallway wall and up the stairs, too.  They move quickly when they want to.
