Homeschooling Moms Homeschooling Moms

>_<

As a homeschooler what words do people who are just starting out or people who do not homeschool say that make you cringe?

Okay, I'll get the big ones out of the way:

Socialization.

Is that legal?

You must be ultra-religious.

Okay....GO!

There are many Mennonites around us, but seriously it bothered me.

Quoting coala:

I am really astounded by the ignorance of people.  You would think that they would step into the 21st centrury with their thinking and logic.

(I don't know if this is just because of where I live but I've heard this a bit lately)
You must be ultra conservative.
I'm amazed you're not wearing a dress or long skirt.

Not just where you live.  I've been asked about my long denim skirt.  And why my head wasn't covered?  I would guess that's Mennonite, but I'm not sure.

I was told I'm being selfish and keeping my child sheltered from real life!!!

I find it sheltering to keep the kids in a classroom full of other people their age.  How do they possibly learn to interact with the rest of society.

And I find it selfish to send your kids off to school all day.

*I am being very sarcastic here, I don't send my kids but I only say anything like these statements to show other parents what they sound like.  I try to support everyone's personal choices.*

Ha my Ped wished me good luck!  I just go with the flow.  People ask how can you teach this and that I ask how did you teach your kid to walk, talk, use the bathroom, put their clothes on for themselves, manners, rules, and so on and it leaves them speechless.

Did he wish you luck sincerely?  Or was it in that sarcastic way?

I just don't undertand the complete ignorance that people have about homeschooling.  It makes me so angry when people who have no part of our lives think that they can give us their opinion....when we didn't ask for it.

What do your kids do all day?

Yesterday was disturbing for me....we took a walk and the girls rode their bikes, and some woman (a neighbor of mine, don't know many of them) gave us a very weird look and kept staring at us (I've never experienced this when we have been out and about).

At this point most of my neighbors know that I homeschool.  But when we went on vacation to the beach last fall, I had a lady berate me because I had taken my kids out of school for a "frivolous" vacation.  I told her we homeschool and she blew her top.  LOL  Then she glared at us every day while we played on the beach.  SMH!

It's like every person is a sanctimommy as far as homeschooling is concerned.  They *know* you are wrong and they need you to know how wrong you are.  SMH

I'm sure she was being sincere, she and the nurse both asked how it's going and how Eric is doing with things.  I'm sure at the office they hear/see a lot and are very diplomatic and pc about it all.  And even if she was sarcastic about it I can use all the luck and prayers I can get.

You and your children are sheltered, naive, and don't know what's going on in the world.

The only one I ever hear is "I could never be that organized!"  Um, what? I am a completely disorganized person, organization has nothing to do with it!

I hate when people say. I couldn't be stuck with my kids all day. Well why the heck did you have kids?!
