6/17*10/12=5/17

My question is how do you get the answer 5/17?

**Add your quick reply below:**

10/12 reduced is 5/6 and the 6's cancel each other out making the answer 5/17.

no matter how I do it......I get 15/51. I think your answer is wrong....from wherever you are getting it.

I see how you got that, but I don't remember crossing out...in the multiplication aspect. I could be wrong because it has been several years since I have done this and we are only in the adding phase of fractions.

Quoting Knightquester:10/12 reduced is 5/6 and the 6's cancel each other out making the answer 5/17.

1/17 times 10/2

10 times 1= 10

17 times 2 =34

Reduce down and you get 5/17

You do cross cancel.

6/17 x 10/12

recude the 10/12 to 5/6

then cross cancel the 6 from the 6/17 and the 6 from the 5/6 and your answer is 5/17.

**That's what we were getting. It wasn't an option. It's a multiple choice question. 5/17 however is an option.**

Thanks!!! I am going to have to stick that at the back of my brain for when we start this area in math.....the last math course I took was in college and it has been several years.

Even if you do it the long way and multiply straight across, you get 60/204... if you divide them both by 12 (to reduce) you get 5/17.

If you are coming up with something different, maybe there is an error in your calculations.

We weren't reducing by 12.
