My session today with my Abby (5 1/2) went something like this...

"How many triangles are in the picture."

"seven"

"triangles?"

"oh hee hee, I mean three."

"good.  where do we write that?"

Abby:  flip, flop, rolling around...

"Abby, you can't write on the board while rolling on the floor.   What column do we write the three at for the triangles?"

"you are right, that's the right column, but we are writing a 3, Abby, not a 7."

"oops, hee hee hee.. I meant 3... "   **flips and rolls around while sort of erasing the 7**

"Abby, erase the 7, and write how many triangles..."

"um... are there 7?"

If she was paying attention, she was being demanding and bossy.   I pulled out a story mat to present some adding ducklings and chicks.   She flips it over, dumping my stuff on the floor and says brightly, "I want to do this side instead."

"No, Abby, we don't have the parts for that side yet... we need to pick up the ducks and chicks that you dropped on the floor so I can show you a cool math story."

"I can tell a story.   Once upon a time there was a duck and his friend and his friend ran to the store and had another friend that at icecream.    Then this duck went to the garden and ate worms with the mommy hen and icecream with rasberries on top."

"That's a beautiful story Abby.  How can we make it a math story?"

****chirp**** crickets**** chirp****

Then abby says, "The icecream is melting."

My 6yo is full of, "I don't know" right now.  If I asked him his name he wouldn't know it.  BUT, if I am off doing something else, he's full of knowledge.  Grrr......  So I'm just focused right now on them learning, now showing.  I hate that.  But I also hate a skull full of painful knots.  :)

This is actually not a rough day.   This is every day with Abby.     LOL!

LOL! She sounds CHARMING!  Seriously, she does, but I do realize the lack of focus is very challenging to deal with.  Wondering, does she seem particularly sophisticated in her thinking?  Wondering if her bright little mind is all over the place where she's not really paying attention to the details because she's busy thinking about all kinds of other things.  It makes me think of giftedness and inattentive-type of ADHD.. right down to the flopping around.  I have one of those myself. ;-)

Kind of frustrating. My 4 year old is like this and my 7 year old used to be like this last school year.
