Singer Mindy McCready's Latest Rehab Stint May Ruin Her Chances at Motherhood
It's getting hard to keep up with country singer Mindy McCready, because the bad news just keeps rolling in. As some of you may know, her background is extremely troubled: multiple suicide attempts, addiction issues, an incident in December of 2011 involving her unlawfully taking her son from his legal guardian. Most recently, her name was back in the headlines when her boyfriend died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and she eventually went on Dateline to deny the unpleasant rumor that she may have had something to do with his death.
The very latest development in McCready's life, however, is maybe the most upsetting of all. Although hopefully it's exactly the brutal intervention she needed to get it together for her children's sake.
According to Mindy McCready's father, she's been spiraling downhill ever since her boyfriend died -- to the point where she's not being a good mom to her two young sons (her old son Zander is 6, and her youngest, Zayne, is 9 months old). In a petition filed by her father and approved by a judge, Tim McCready wrote:
Since boyfriend (David Wilson) shot himself she has been in bed for 3 wks. Sleeps all day. Drinks all night and is taking Rx drugs. Not bathing or even helping take care of her 2 children. [She] is not making any sense of [any] conversations with anyone. Very verbally abusive to Zander (6) son.
In the approval of the petition, the judge agreed that McCready's situation is unsustainable:
There is cause to find there is clear and convincing evidence that Respondent is in imminent danger of harm to herself or others, suicidal or gravely disabled.
McCready has been committed to a treatment facility and ordered to stay there for at least three weeks. On Wednesday, her boys were removed by the Department of Human Services, and they are currently in foster care.
Just one week earlier, Billy McKnight, McCready's ex-husband, had filed his own court papers documenting his belief that McCready was unable to care for her children. He asked for full custody of their son, Zander.
What can I possibly add to this sad story? It's just a terrible situation, and my heart breaks for those poor kids. Especially little Zander, who's had more family trauma at 6 than most people rack up in a lifetime. It's hard to feel positive about the chances that McCready will accept the help and do the hard work to get better once and for all, but as long as she's breathing, she's got a chance to make a better life. I hope for everyone involved that she does so.
